Actually, he is not drunk and passed out like he looks. He is just happily sleeping..having bunny dreams. What a cutie. While my dear hubby was out mowing the front yard a few weeks back...he vibrated the ground enough to awaken this bunny out of his baby bunny burrow (say that fast 3 times). Thankfully the bunny came out, cause if he wasn't burrowed deep enough in his burrow his mama made for him..he would have came into contact with some high speed mower blades..and turned into lawn fertilizer.
So the kids and I came out to investigate and check him out. The bunny was ohhh..sooo...cute. Despite our initial motherly feeling of, "Oh, lets go save the bunny..the momma must have left him behind" sort of feeling. I wanted to wait and make sure the bunny really was abandoned/outcasted by it's mother like Scott by the Kardashian Clan.
The problem is that many people find what they think are orphaned or abandoned baby bunnies, when they are not. Then, unknowingly break up families and separate mother rabbits from their babies in an effort to "save" them.
You see, Bunnies only feed their young once every 24 hours..usually in the middle of the night, and they don't sit around their burrow nest. The babies will just burrow down in their nest until momma comes in the night to feed them.
So you won't be around to see the babies feedings or the momma bunny..which leads many to believe they have been abandoned, when in fact that is not the case. Only rarely does a mother rabbit truly abandon or ignore her babies. This may occur when a very Immature rabbit gives birth, In which case, she usually does not build a nest or make any preparations. So since there was a nice burrow made for the baby..I was not concerned and didn't want to separate him from his momma.
SO, the kids and I covered the baby back up and left him there. I figured we would check the next day to see if he was still plump and fed, and warm, and doing fine..if not then we could take the bunny in under our care and bottle feed it.However..the next day came..daddy checked on baby bunny, and baby had expired. Gone to bunny heaven, leaping around in a carrot patch carefree. Never having to worry about any human coming and chopping off one of his feet to make a key-chain. Yes, he is in a much better place.
Cormac and Chloe said, "Ohh..poor bunny died", and they helped daddy bury bunny in the yard. Hence, he ended up being lawn fertilizer anyways. Sometimes you can't escape your fate.
I then suffered from a case of,"Letting baby bunny die and it is all my fault, why hadn't I done something guilt" Not sure why it died..but it was a little hot that day and may have gotten dehydrated.
So in honor of our Sleeping Baby Bunny, I wrote a song for him. You know, kinda like the Tiger Song from the movie Hangover, since baby was always taking a bunny nap:
You can press play and then sing along to our lyrics below. Whatever your pleasure.

"What Do Bunnies Dream Of"
by Jamie Laybourn
What do bunnies dream of, when they take a little bunny snooze.
Do they dream of running through my carrot patches,
or being cooked in a carrot-bunny stew.
Don't you worry your pretty stripped head,
we're gonna get you back to your bunny momma and in your cozy burrow bed.
And they we're gonna find out why they abandoned you,
and in the end were gonna give them a good talking to.
Buunny, Buuunny, Oh, Baby Buunny Bo Bun Buns.
But if we wake up in the morning to find your cold stiff dead body.., well then we're s-hit out of luck"
R.I.P. Front Yard Baby Bunny.
Love the Laybourn's :)
